Bandarban, Feb 23: A local leader of ruling Awami League in Bandarban was shot dead and five others were injured as assailants opened fire on them in a hilly area Saturday evening.Bandarban additional superintendent of police Reza Sarwar told this correspondent that the president of an AL ward unit in sadar upazila, Bachnu Marma, 55, died on the spot as unidentified assailants opened fire on them at a village shop in Jamchhari at about 7:00pm on Saturday.
Five others, including former union council member and Juba League, Uch Tohyai, 65, were injured, the ASP added.
Bachnu was a resident of Bhitarpara of Jamchhari and son of Mongboi Marma.
The injured are former union council member Uch Thoyai, 65, Juba League leaders Monka Ching Marma, 25, Hlamang Ching, 30, Kapomong 45, and a disabled man named Adasi, 26.
Police and locals said that a group of eight to 10 armed people arrived at the village shop and fired indiscriminately on the victims.
The sadar police station officer-in-charge said that on receiving the news, they took the bodies from the spot and sent the injured to Bandarban Sadar Hospital.
Panic gripped the area after the incident and police and army personnel were deployed in the area.
