Dhaka, Nov 20: The Appellate Division on Monday asked the jail authorities to solemnise in 15 days a rape victim’s marriage with the rapist, now detained in Lalmonirhat district jail.
A six-judge bench chaired by chief justice Obaidul Hassan issued the directive during hearing a petition filed by the rapist Rakibuzzaman Rakib to lift stay on his bail that was granted by the High Court in June.
The Appellate Division stayed the rapist’ bail following a government’ appeal.
The victim’ father told the Division that he had no objection about the rapist’ bail since the families of bride and groom agreed to the marriage.
The Division said that it would consider the rapist’ bail prayer on December 4, after getting the copy of solemnisation.
According to the case, Rakibuzzaman of Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat abducted the victim of the same village on July 13, 2022.
Later, the police arrested the alleged rapist after the victim’s father filed a rape and abduction case against him on April 8, 2023 stating that his daughter was minor being 17-year old.
