UGC asks JU to inform actions taken against teacher over sexual harassment

Dhaka, Mar 03: The University Grants Commission has asked the Jahangirnagar University administration to inform it of actions taken against a teacher of the university on allegation of sexual harassment.

A letter signed by the commission’s public university management division deputy director Mouli Azad on Thursday asked the university administration to provide the commission with the information in seven working days.

The allegation has been brought against public health and informatics department assistant professor Mahmudur Rahman Jony.

Citing a letter of the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad and a report published in a national daily, the letter mentioned the allegation of sexual harassment of a female job seeker, forcing her to abort and submit an indemnity letter, and harassment of several more female students of the department mentally and physically by the teacher.

On February 9, 2023, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad submitted a memorandum to the UGC seeking action against the teacher.

There were also allegations against assistant professor Mahmudur Rahman Jony of developing immoral relations with female students promising them of the university faculty position.

The accused teacher was forced to step down from the position of assistant proctor over the allegation.

JU vice-chancellor Nurul Alam said that he did not receive any letter in this regard yet.

Asked about the action taken against the alleged teacher, he said, ‘The teacher has already been relieved of administrative duties as assistant proctor. The next step will be taken following the report of the investigation committee formed in this regard.’
