BNP leader Ishraque gets bail after surrender

Dhaka, Jan 22: A court in Dhaka has granted bail to BNP leader Engineer Ishraque Hossain in a case filed for allegedly torching vehicle in the capital’s Motijheel area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arafatul Rakib passed the order on Sunday after he had surrendered before the court, his lawyer Mohiuddin Chowdhury confirmed.

On April 6, 2022, police arrested Ishraque from Motijheel area during a leaflet distribution program of Sramik Dal protesting the commodity prices hike.

At that time, police said he was apprehended in an old case of torching vehicle.

On the day, the court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tamanna Farha ordered to send him to jail after he was produced before the court.

On April 12 of the same year, the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain granted bail to him after his lawyer filed a bail petition. Since then, he was on bail.

But a court on December 5 last year issued an arrest warrant against Ishraque after he sought time not attending court.

Then sub-inspector Ataur Rahman Bhuiyan lodged the case with Motijheel Police Station in which 42 people, including Ishraque, were named.

The case statement said the accused, on November 12, 2020, set a vehicle on fire to burn to death Agrani Bank officials and employees against Bangladesh Bank to foil the election of Dhaka-18.

The passengers of the vehicle narrowly survived the incident.

Ishraque Hossain is, however, a member of the foreign affairs advisory committee of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and also the son of former Dhaka city mayor late Sadek Hossain Khoka.
