Escape of 2 militants: Mehedi on 7-day remand

Dhaka, Nov 24: A Dhaka court has placed Mehedi Hasan Omi alias Rafi on a seven-day remand in a case filed over snatching away two death row convict militants from the court premises in Old Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin passed the order on Thursday after the investigation officer of the case and the Inspector of Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit Muhammad Abul Kalam Azad produced Mehedi before the court with a ten-day remand prayer.

Mehedi, a member of the outlawed organization Ansar Al Islam’s military wing, directly participated in snatching two militants. He also took part in the killing mission of blogger Nazimuddin Samad, a student of Jagannath University, on April 6, 2016.

On Sunday (November 20), two members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) sentenced to death in publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan murder case were snatched away from police custody by their cohorts at Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court premises.

The escaped convicts are Abu Siddiq Sohel from Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat and Moynul Hasan Shamim from Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj.

After the incident, Dhaka Metropolitan DB Police Chief Harun-Or-Rashid told Jago News four people riding on two motorcycles went to the court area and snatched away the two death-row convicts after spraying something on the eyes of policemen.

Later, the court Inspector Julhas filed a case against 20 named people and 7-8 unidentified people with Kotwali Police Station in the capital in this connection.
