Khulna, Feb 11: Five people were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a car in Harintana Gate area of Khulna on Sunday night.
The deceased were identified as — leaders and activists of Gopalganj District Chhatra League or Juba League —Mahbub Hasan Babu, Sadiqul Alam, Walid Mahmud Utsab, Saju Ahmed and Animul Islam Gazi, confirmed Khulna Metropolitan Police spokesman Additional Police Commissioner Moniruzzaman Mithu.
Witnesses said the Khulna-bound truck carrying cement collided with the Bagerhat-bound microbus in the area under Labanchhara Police Station around 10:45pm, leaving the five dead on the spot.
Quoting witnesses, Shafiqul said the Khulna-bound truck, carrying cement, had collided with the Bagerhat-bound car, leaving three passengers of the car and two pedestrians dead on the spot.
After being notified, police and fire-fighters arrived at the scene and recovered the bodies of the deceased.
The truck was later impounded by police. Its driver, however, managed to flee the scene right after the accident and is yet to be apprehended.
