Narayanganj, Mar 20: At least six people were killed and 20 people went missing after a launch capsized in the Shitalakshya River in Narayanganj on Sunday.
Of the deceased, one was identified as Joynal, 50, while the identity of others is yet to be ascertained, said Shahjahan Sikder, an official of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.
Sources at the fire service said the launch named ‘MM Ashraf Uddin’ which was heading towards Munshiganj with 50 passengers, capsized in the river as it collided with a goods-laden cargo ship ‘MV Rupsi-9’ around 2 pm near Al-Amin
Nagar area under Sadar upazila of the district.
After the collision, half of the passengers of the launch managed to swim ashore.
Officer-in-Charge of Narayanganj Navy Police station Md Moniruzzaman said three units of fire-fighters were conducting a rescue operation.
