Awami League expels GCC Mayor Jahangir

Dhaka, Nov 19: The ruling Awami League has expelled its Gazipur unit general secretary and Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) mayor Jahangir Alam for his derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu and martyred freedom fighters, an allegation that he terms a conspiracy against him.

The decision was made at a meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee at Ganabhaban with party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Friday evening.

Meeting sources said legal action would be taken against Jahangir.

The party issued a show-cause notice seeking his explanation on the remarks on October 3, a day after the matter was widely discussed at the party’s Dhanmondi office.

Mayor Jahangir earlier claimed that his political opponent and some conspirators were spreading propaganda against him.

In September, videos of Mayor Jahangir making some derogatory comments on Bangabandhu and some martyred freedom fighters at a program went viral on social media.

Tension within the party became obvious on September 24, when the mayor’s supporters as well as his opponents demonstrated by blocking the highway near Boardbazar.

Since then, party supporters of the rival groups have been staging protests and counter-protest in the city.
