2 suspects remanded over DU student ‘rape’

Dhaka, Oct 12: Two suspects were remanded to police custody on Monday for allegedly raping a Dhaka University student.

Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad’s Joint Convener Saiful Islam and Vice-President Nazmul Huda were remanded for two days each in the case filed on Sept 20.

They were arrested on Sunday night, said Rajib Al Masud, the deputy commissioner of Detective Branch of Police (Lalbagh Division).

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan granted the remand after DB Inspector Wahiduzzaman produced them before the court and sought seven days to interrogate the suspects.

Former Ducsu vice-president Nurul Haque Nur, Hasan, Nazmul Hasan Sohag and Saiful – joint conveners of the Parishad, its Vice-President Nazmul and DU student Abdullah Hil Baki were accused in the rape case filed at Lalbagh Police Station.

Another case was filed with Kotwali police against the six on Sept 21 under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act by the same student.

On Oct 8, the DU student started a fast-unto-death demanding arrest of Nur and five others in the rape case.

She vowed to continue the strike until Nur and Hasan Al Mamun, suspended convener of the Parishad, are arrested.

“I’ll continue my strike until the accused are arrested,” she said.
