Gazipur, April 12: The ready-made garments workers have defied the ongoing lockdown in Gazipur to stage demonstration, demanding salary arrears of two months. The workers of East West Group, and New Way Fashion Ltd at Signboard and Vogra Bypass areas in Gazipur city blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway around 9am on Sunday.
The protesting workers said they have been suffering from hunger as there is no food in their houses that led them to take to the street.
“We have been left unpaid for two months and the authorities are making dilly-dally. We have no food to eat and we owe shopkeepers. Amid this, Gazipur district has been put on lockdown,” said Shahina Begum works at New Way Fashion.
She alleged that they do not get government relief but locals and voters of Gazipur get so. And they cannot go to home too because of transport shutdown. “So, we have to starve to death along with children if this situation continues,” she added.
After about an hour, the agitating labourers withdrew their blockade from the highway as the owners concerned declared to pay salary by April 16.
Gacha Police Station officer in-charge Md Ismail Hossain said ready-made garments workers staged demonstration blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for salary arrears of two months.
Later, they called off road block on assurance by the authorities that they would be paid by April 16, the OC added.
Earlier on Saturday night, Gazipur deputy commissioner SM Tariqul Islam announced that lockdown has been imposed in the district in an effort to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus that infected, as of Saturday, 482 people and killed 30 ones in the country.
