Coronavirus outbreak continues to spread, Qatar bans arrivals from 14 countries


International desk, Mar 09: There are 550 cases of the novel coronavirus in the United States, according to the state and local health agencies, governments and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.There are 49 cases of repatriated citizens, including three from Wuhan China, 46 from the Diamond Princess cruise ship and 21 on the Grand Princess cruise ship.

There are 480 cases in 34 states and the District of Columbia, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases to 550, according to CNN Health’s tally of US cases that are detected and tested in the United States through public health systems.

A total of 21 people have died from the coronavirus in the US.

The novel coronavirus has killed more than 3,500 people, and infected over 105,000, according to CNN’s tally — the majority in mainland China.

Search and rescue efforts are continuing after a hotel that was used as a coronavirus quarantine center collapsed in Quanzhou, China. Ten people have died and 23 are still unaccounted for.

Qatar bans arrivals from 14 countries

Qatar has temporarily barred travellers from 14 countries starting March 9 as a precaution against the spread of coronavirus, the government announced on Sunday.

The ban covers China, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Syria and Thailand.

Qatar Airways had already suspended flights to and from Italy.

Qatar reported three more cases of the virus on Sunday, bringing the total there to 15.

Malaysia reports six new coronavirus cases

Malaysia confirmed six new coronavirus cases on Sunday, raising the nationwide tally to 99, according to a report from state media Bernama.

All new cases are the close contacts of a cluster linked to a previous case.

Out of the 99 cases, 24 are fully recovered and discharged from the hospital.
