Gazipur, Feb 19: A housewife has died following her arrest by the law enforcers in Bhawal Gazipur area of Gazipur City Corporation.Police claimed she died due to illness after they arrested her but her family claimed she was beaten dead.
Deceased Yeasmin Begum was the wife of Abdul Hye, a resident of Bhawal Gazipur village.
Arafat Rahman Jisan, son of the deceased, said a team of police came their home to arrest his father Abdul Hye in a drug case on Tuesday evening. During this, his father was not at home.
They, later, beat up his mother and took her with them, said Jisan.
Later, he went to DB office where he was told her mother is in hospital. Going there, he heard her mother died of cardiac arrest, Jisan added.
Meanwhile, city detectives’ deputy commissioner Manzur Rahman denied beating the woman to death.
He said they conducted a drive in the village on information of drug dealing there. Later, they arrested Yeasmin and recovered 100 pieces of Yaba tablets from her possession. But her drug peddler husband fled, he added.
Yeasmin was taken to DB office following arrest but she felt sick. Later, she was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital and referred to Dhaka for better treatment but she died, the DB official also said.
Yeasmin and her husband Abdul Hye were accused in several drug cases, Manzur added.
The hospital physician Md Rafiqul Islam said primarily they assume Yeasmin died of cardiac arrest. No injury marks were seen in her body, the doctor added.
