Dhaka city polls begin: PM casts vote at Dhaka City College


Dhaka, Feb 01: Balloting in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) begin at 8am and continue till 4pm without any break.Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has cast her vote in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) polls at the Dhaka City College centre in Dhaka.

She cast her vote at the centre in Dhanmondi after 8:05am on Saturday.

After casting vote to Awami League-backed DSCC mayoral candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, the prime minister told reporters that she exercised her franchise through the electronic voting machine (EVM) easily and in a few time.

She, however, urged the law enforcement agencies to be vigilant so that every voter can cast their votes safely.

The voting in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections began at 8am and it will continue till 4pm without any break to elect mayors and councillors.

Thirteen aspirants — six in Dhaka north and seven in the south — are vying for the posts of mayor.

The entire election will be held using electronic voting machines (EVMs) instead of traditional ballot papers.

As many as 3,010,273 people will exercise their right of franchise at the DNCC, and 2,453,194 at the DSCC elections.

The last elections to the city corporations were held on April 28, 2015.Six mayoral candidates, including AL nominated Atiqul Islam and BNP’s Tabith Awal, are contesting the DNCC polls while seven contenders, including AL’s Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and BNP’s Ishraque Hossain, will fight in the Dhaka south.

Weather is clear, but the presence of voters is still thin. Election officials expect the turnout of voters will increase as the day progresses.
