IGP assures Hindu community of security during Durga Puja


Dhaka, September 12: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary on Thursday directed police officers to ensure security during the upcoming Durga Puja, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Hindu community.The IGP gave the instruction  at a meeting on law and order and security measures for Durga Puja with himself in the chair held at the conference room of police headquarters on Thursday.

This year’s Durga Puja will be celebrated in Bangladesh from October 4-8.

While addressing the meeting, the chief of Bangladesh police said that stern actions have to be taken against any person or group who would carry out campaigning through Facebook and other social media to destroy communal harmony hurting religious sentiments.

The IGP called upon the leaders of ‘Puja Udjapan Committee’ to engage volunteers and set up CCTV cameras and fire-fighting equipment as well as to use hand metal detectors during the making of idols.

He said all religious communities have to maintain religious harmony by showing respect for religious sentiments.

The IGP expressed his hope saying that the upcoming Durga Puja would be celebrated peacefully across the country as in the past with the concerted efforts of all.

AIG (Operations) of Police Headquarters Sayeed Tariqul Hasan placed the overall security measures taken for Durga Puja in the meeting where detailed discussion about the security aspects of the upcoming Durga Puja was discussed.

At the meeting, leaders of the Puja Udjapan Parishad expressed their satisfaction over the security measures taken for the Durga Puja.

They said that the capability of the police has been increased much compared to the past as police has already proved its skill preventing militancy, terrorism as well as other crimes.

The number of puja mandaps have increased every year as safety has been created among the people, they said adding that more than 31,000 puja mandaps have been set up across the country this year.

They also hoped the upcoming Durga Puja will be celebrated peacefully across the country, the leaders said.

Senior officials of different law enforcement and intelligence agencies  and leaders of Hindu Community, including Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and  Dhaka Mohanagar Sarbajanin  Puja Committee were present.
