Biman plane skids off runway in Myanmar, breaks into three


Dhaka, May 08: A Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ Bombardier Dash-8 aircraft has skidded off the runway at Myanmar’s Yangon International Airport, losing its wings and breaking into three parts. Pilots were attempting to land as the accident occurred.While, The Myanmar Times quoting aviation sources has reported that a Biman Bangladesh Airlines plane has crashed this evening on the runway at Yangon International Airport.

At least 30 passengers were injured.

“Unfortunately, a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dhaka to Yangon skidded off the runway while landing this evening. Weather was not good at that time,” said an official at the Bangladesh mission in Yangon wishing anonymity.

He said all the passengers –around 30 — were injured in the accident and over 15 of them were hospitalised.

The aircraft suffered major damages, the official added.

The S2-AGQ – Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 was seen in pictures received by The Myanmar Times lying on the grass near the runway. Dhaka-headquartered Biman Bangladesh Airlines, known as Biman, is the national flag carrier of Bangladesh.

Posts on social media suggest that the aircraft slid off the runway. It was unclear whether the incident took place during takeoff or landing.

The Myanmar Times has contacted Yangon Aerodrome Company, the operator of Yangon International Airport, for further details. No information on possible casualties was immediately available by press time.

The airport is currently closed by press time.
