Dhaka, Mar 29: A case will be filed soon in connection with the fire at Banani commercial area that killed at least 25 people, police chief Mohammad Javed Patwary said Friday.“We hope that the victims’ families will file the case. Otherwise, the state will file one,” the Inspector General of Police told the media after visiting the FR Tower at noon.
Police said they had not received any complaints about persons missing since the fire that broke out at the 22-storey building on Thursday afternoon and spread to other floors.
Fire service chief Brig Gen Md Sazzad Hussain had said that the building had “minimal firefighting equipment” and that they were “unusable”.
Housing and Public Works Minister Rezaul Karim said the fire incident was “not an accident but an act of murder”.
Meanwhile, the fire service handed over the building’s charge to police. Separate teams will search each floor, accompanied by representatives of the owners to assess the damage.
IGP Patwary said the search will likely be completed within the evening.
Experts from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology will examine the building’s fitness. Based on their assessment, a decision will be taken to either reopen or shut down the building.
