Dhaka, Mar 29: The death toll from a massive fire at a high-rise building in the capital’s Banani commercial area rose to 25.Twent four bodies were handed over to relatives as of Friday morning, deputy commissioner (Gulshan Zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Mostaq Ahmed told reporters on Friday.
“We have identified all the bodies and 24 bodies were handed over to their relatives. The fire service department still working rescue operation. The police will take over the charge of the building and later 21 police teams will work inside the building,” he said.
Legal action will be taken after identifying alleged people behind the fire incident, the police official said.
The fire broke out at FR Tower around 12:52 pm on Thursday, Dhaka Fire Service Central Control Room Duty officer Ataur Rahman told newsman.
After about five-hour of frantic efforts, 21 units of the fire service brought the inferno under control.
Besides, separate teams of Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Air Force, Navy and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) assisted the fire service men to douse the fire and intensify the rescue operation to recover the victims from the spot.
Three helicopters of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) were used to rescue the trapped people from inside the building.
