Women leaders demand resignation of shipping minister

Dhaka, Mar 9: The women leaders under the platform of Bangladesh Narimukti Kendra (BNK) on Wednesday demanded resignation of Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan for his recent remarks on women repression in the last year Pahela Baishakh programme.

In a press release signed by president of the organisation Sima Dutt and Morzina Khatun, general secretary, protested and denounced his remarks.

Earlier on March 8, Shajahan Khan at a Women’s Day function organised by a private organisation in Dhaka University had said that sexual assault on women in Pahela Baishakh programme at Suhrawardy Udyan was not such a significant matter.

He had said, “20 million people live in Dhaka. A small incident can take place. It is of little significance among so many people How important was the incident to draw media attention?”

The BNK leaders demanded Shahjahan Khan’s resignation terming his comments as ‘shocking’.

“He must seek apology for what he said or resign,” the release said.

They also demanded arrest of the culprits before the next Pahela Baishakh.

President and general secretary of the organisation alleged that the assaulters are being saved by the government authorities.

Tuesday’s remarks by the shipping minister again proved that they are sided for the criminals.
