Dhaka, Mar 22: The first phase voting at 712 Union Parishads (UP) ended on Tuesday amid sporadic clashes, storming of centres, snatching and stuffing of ballot papers in Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions in the country.
Voting at over 40 centres have been postponed because of irregularities and clashes, according to Election Commission Assistant Secretary Ashfaqur Rahman.
But no voting was postponed in an entire council.
Election Commissioner Mohammad Abu Hafiz hoped the voter turnout in the first phase of elections will be over 60 percent.
He said violence and clashes were comparatively less in the 7,500 polls centres.
Ruling Awami League has claimed the voting was held in festive mood, but rival BNP alleged large-scale rigging.
