Dhaka, Mar 22: The first phase voting at 712 Union Parishads (UP) ended on Tuesday amid sporadic clashes, storming of centres, snatching and stuffing of ballot papers in Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions in the country.

The election officials have been counting the ballots for the posts of UP chairman, member and reserved member since voting ended at 4pm.polling centre attack

Voting at over 40 centres have been postponed because of irregularities and clashes, according to Election Commission Assistant Secretary Ashfaqur Rahman.

But no voting was postponed in an entire council.

Election Commissioner Mohammad Abu Hafiz hoped the voter turnout in the first phase of elections will be over 60 percent.

He is happy with the environment in which the UP polls are being held for the first time on party lines.clashes

He said violence and clashes were comparatively less in the 7,500 polls centres.

Ruling Awami League has claimed the voting was held in festive mood, but rival BNP alleged large-scale rigging.
