Dhaka, September 20: A court in Dhaka on Tuesday framed charges against BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 73 others in connection with a case filed for assaulting police in 2012.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Mashud Seikh framed charges against the 74 leaders and activists of the party in the morning.
The court cancelled bails of 38 others and issued arrest warrants against them as they remained absent during the charge framing hearing on Tuesday. The court fixed December 4 to start trial of the case.
Earlier in the day the court rejected 36 petitions submitted for discharging Fakhrul and others.
On December 9, 2012, a group of leaders and activists, of the then 18-party alliance, led by BNP leader including Mirza Fakhrul brought out a procession and at a point they allegedly assaulted policemen and prevented them from discharging their duties during a blockade in front of Capital hotel in the city’s Paltan area, according to the prosecution.
They also allegedly blasted nine crude bombs that left several policemen injured.
Later a case was filed against Fakhrul and several others with Paltan Police Station.
On July 28, 2014 the investigation officer of the case pressed charges against Fakhrul and 73 others for their alleged involvement with assaulting policemen, preventing them from discharging their duties and creating anarchy in the city’s Paltan area.
