Tampaco packaging factory fire still out of control, claims another life

Gazipur, September 11: The devastating fire that erupted at Tempaco Factory in Tongi BSCIC Railway Station area around 6.00am on Saturday after an explosion is yet to come under complete control even after 28 hours have passed.

Meanwhile, another critically injured Ripon Das died on Sunday at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The death toll rises to 25.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s Resident Physician Partha Shankar Pal said 35-year-old Ripon succumbed to his burn injuries in the wee hours of Sunday.

He added three others are being treated with burn injuries at the hospital.

At least 35 others, injured in the mishap, are being treated at the state-run Tongi Hospital, DMCH and Adhunik Medical College Hospital at capital’s Uttara.

However, firefighters are still working to douse the flames.

About 25 firefighting units were working at the spot to bring the situation under control.

Md Johurul Amin Mia, deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, said, “The fire is now under our control. It will no longer spread.  Huge flames are coming out of the factory. The building is in heated condition. We will try to enter into the building after dousing the fire completely.”

At least 24 people, mostly workers, died and many others suffered injuries when flames tore through Tampaco Foils Limited`s factory in BSCIC industrial area of Tongi yesterday.
