Sweater factory guts in Gazipur


Gazipur, Feb 02: A devastating fire broke out in a sweater factory at Malekerbari area of Gazipur district on Tuesday morning.

At least four workers and several fire fighting personnel were injured in the fire incident.

However, the reason behind the fire incident could not be known immediately.

Assistant deputy director of Gazipur fire service Akhteruzzaman Liton said, the fire originated from a go down of 7th floor of Matrix Sweater Limited , a 8-story building situated at Malekerbari area in Gazipur city on the Dhaka-Mymensing highway at around 7.30 am.

The fire spread to the whole floor immediate after the incident and burnt to ashes a huge amount of ready made garments items that was stored for shipment for buyers.

On information, 3 units of fire service from Joydebpur fire station in Gazipur rushed to the spot and started to take under control the flame.

Later, 21 more units from Tongi, Kaliganj, Bhaluka of Mymensing, Savar, Dhaka EPZ and Dhaka fire service joined with them and doused the fire at around 1.30pm after six hours of frantic efforts.GAZiPUR-MATRiX SWEATER FiRE-1

Fire service sources said, 4 workers of the factory and some of fire fighting personnel were injured while they were trying to douse the flame.

They were sent to the factory clinic for treatment. There was no worker inside the factory during fire incident as the morning shift could not start.

Getting the news of fire incident, director of fire service (operation) Maj A.K.M. Shakil Newaj reached to the spot.

He said, the reason behind the fire incident and losses could not be assessed immediately. It will be assessed after investigation, he added.

Deputy assistant director of the factory Anowar Sadat said, it is a sister concern of Labib group.

There are about five thousand workers in the factory, but no worker was stay inside the factory during the fire incident.

He said, finished products were stored in the go down for shipment. He claimed, products more than Tk 100 crores were damaged in the fire.

Assistant superintendent of Gazipur highway police Shakhawat Hossain said, traffic movement on Dhaka-Mymensing highway was suspended for two hours due to the fire incident. But vehicular movement was continue through diversion road from Bhugra bypass road to Mirerbazar-Tongi road.

At about 12pm, the Dhaka-Mymensing highway was opened again for traffic movement. On the other hand, several factory in the area were declared close considering the security after the fire incident.

However, a five member committee led by additional district magistrate Rahenul Islam was formed by the Gazipur district administration to probe the incident.

The committee asked to submit its report within seven working days.
