Sub-committees to work for proper RTA enforcement: Home Minister

Dhaka, November 24: Four sub-committees, headed by secretaries, have been formed by the taskforce to take effective steps for restoring discipline on roads and highways by properly enforcing the Road Transport Act, said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Sunday.“The four sub-committees were formed to implement the 111-point recommendation of the taskforce, find out the weaknesses of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and inspect road condition, traffic management and make awareness about the RTA,” he said.

The decision was taken at the maiden meeting of the taskforce formed by the Home Ministry to restore discipline in the road transport sector and thus curb road accidents.

The secretaries to the Road Transport and Highways Division, Public Safety Division, Local Government Ministry and Information Ministry were made heads of the sub-committees.

Asked about the capital punishment in the new act, Asaduzzaman said, “There’s no death penalty in the new act and misinformation was spread for creating panic among drivers…the Information Secretary is working on it.”
