Dhaka, June 28: Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday said that Superintendent of Police Babul Akter is not involved in the much-talked-about murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in Chittagong.
The Minister made the opinion while addressing a programme at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
“Babul Akhter was not questioned about his involvement in wife murder at the DB Office. He is also not under the surveillance of police,” the Home Minister was responding to questions of journalists following a function of the Department of Liquor and Narcotics Control at Osmani Memorial auditorium.
There is no allegation against SP Babul for which police can take him to custody, he added.
Kamal said two accused were arrested analysing the CCTV footage. “SP Babul Akhter was taken to identify them,” he said.
The Home Minister said the investigation into Mitu murder case is going on and details of the case would be known after the investigation.
Mitu, 32, was hacked and shot dead by three men at GEC intersection area in the port city when she took her son to his school bus in the morning on June 5, the same day her husband was supposed to report at the Police Headquarters as the newly promoted SP.
Babul filed a case against three unidentified persons and their cohorts with Panchlaish police station the next day.
No local or international militant group has claimed responsibility for the murder, but police had been claiming that members of Chittagong-based militant outfits, especially Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh, or other vested groups might have carried out the murder to avenge the crackdowns led by Babul when he was in the Detective Branch of police.
Following the murder of wife, SP Babul Akhter has been living along with his son and daughter at his father-in-law’s house at Banasree. His father-in-law Mosharraf Hossain went on retirement as an OC. Father Abdul Wadud Mia also worked in police.
On Saturday morning, Mosharraf Hossain told journalists that at about 1:00am on Friday last, Khilgaon Police Station OC Moinul Hossain and Deputy Commissioner of Motijheel Division Anwar Hossain took Babul Akhter from his Banasree residence.
He said: “They took Babul away saying that IG Saheb asked Babul to meet with him. Since then we could not make any contract with police. Even, we can’t make contact with those who picked Babul up.”
At about 4:30pm on Saturday, police took SP Babul to his residence. Since then police have been keeping a close vigilance on the house. Babul did not come out of the Banasree residence over the last four days. He even did not talk to anyone.
Meanwhile, rumours have riffed over the murder of Mitu and role of her husband in the murder.
