Six to die for killing a van driver in Kushtia

Kushtia, February 7: A Kushtia court on Tuesday awarded death penalty to six people in a case filed over the killing of a van driver at Sadar upazila in 2012.
Judge of District and Session Judge’s Court Reza Mohammad Alamgir Hasan Islam handed down the verdict in presence of the convicts after examining the records and witnesses.
The death row convicts are Sazzad, Mazed, Shukchad, Rashidul Islam, Kalai, and Manser.
In addition to the death sentence, each suspect has been fined Tk 5,000, said prosecutor Anup Kumar Nandi.
According to the case statement, Sazzad and Mazed called rickshaw-van puller Abu Bakkar Siddique, son of Abdul Jalil of village Jotpara in Sadar upazila, out of the house on June 10, 2012.
Local people found the body of Bakkar near his house on the following day and informed police.
Nur Haque, brother of the deceased, filed a case against seven people with Kushtia Model Police Station.
Of the seven accused, Kamrul Islam was killed in a gunfight with police.
