Six attackers among 22 killed in Gulshan restaurant attack: ISPR


Dhaka, July 2: The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate of armed forces on Saturday said that 20 bodies were recovered and six armed terrorists were killed in a rescue operation at Spanish restaurant in Gulshan area.

At least 28 people were killed including six militants and two police officers; and some 40 people were injured in the incident of hostage crisis at a restaurant ‘Holey Artisan Bakery’ in the diplomatic zone of the capital.

A joint commando operation yesterday cleared the restaurant popular with foreigners after conducting a heavy operation killing six militants who attacked it on Friday night, took dozens of hostages and killed 20 people on Friday night.

After completing the joint operation code named ‘thunderbolt’ comprising of Army, Navy, Air, RAB, police and BGB, the Army at a press briefing it its headquarters yesterday said they rescued 13 persons including a Japanese and two Sri Lanka citizens and six attackers were shot dead during the operation while one of the gunmen was arrested.

Brig Gen Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury, director of military operations said through the commando operation at 7:40 am yesterday they cleared the restaurant within 12/13 minutes after killing the militants and completed all other activities of the operations by 8:30am.

Of the seven terrorists, six were killed and one suspicious one was arrested, he said.

He also said that 20 bodies were recovered after the operation ‘Thunderbolt’ and these people were killed on Friday night and most of them were murdered brutally by sharp weapons.

The post mortem of the bodies will be conducted at the Combined Medical Hospital (CMH) as per rule. To make sure of their identity, the claimant of the bodies can contact the provost marshal of Army with the following number 01769012524.

“The attackers killed 20 persons by hacking after them hostage at night. The recovered bodies are foreigner but their identities are yet to be confirmed,”Brigadier General Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury, Director of Military Operations, told reports at a press briefing.

He said ‘Operation Thunderbolt’ was planned after the terrorist attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery restaurant on Friday night.

Six attackers were also killed during the operation thunderbolt, he added.

A big explosion was heard and gunshots were fired at 10:pm that left Banani police officer-in-charge Salauddin and assistant commissioner of police Rabiul Islam dead, and many injured.

Joint forces of Army and Navy commandos along with members of police, RAB and BGB conducted an operation at the restaurant around 7:40am on Saturday.

At least six terrorists were killed in the operation and some 13 people, including a Japanese citizen and two Sri Lankans, were rescued.

Brigadier General Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury also told the reporters that a total of 20 bodies, most of them hacked were later recovered from the spot.

He also thanked the print and television media for their support during the operation.
