Shafik Rehman arrested based on Joy’s Facebook status: Fakhrul

Dhaka, April 23: Senior journalist Shafik Rehman was arrested only based on the Facebok status posted by the Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir claimed on Saturday.

“The so-called plot of abduction and killing Joy in the USA was not true and it has been proved by the US authorities,” he said while addressing a press conference at BNP Chairperson’s office at Gulshan.

Mirza Fakhrul also claimed that US court acquitted the accused Rizvi Ahmed in case filed by Sajeeb Wazed Joy and the court did not consider Joy as victim.

He also showed the judge’s remark before the journalists: “Ahmed was not convicted of potentially other crimes such as making threats against Individual 1 or his family or attempting to assault or kidnap him or harming him in some either way. If that’s what this case was about and there was evidence of that and he was convicted of that, then individual would be a victim.”

The court also added: “I will also say for the record that the government’s contention that Ahmed in fact sought to kidnap and physically harm an individual is a stretch. I just don’t feel there’s enough evidence that’s presented to me for me to make that finding.”

Mirza Fakhrul demanded immediate release of Shafik, who was arrested by plainclothes detectives on April 16 from his Eskaton house in Dhaka.

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar and Nazrul Islam Khan were, among others, present at the press conference.

On Friday  journalist Shafik Rehman was placed arrested on a fresh five-day remand in the case filed in connection with plotting to ‘abduct and kill’ Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son and her ICT adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
