Dhaka, May 17: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday set May 24 to deliver its verdict on the appeal against the High Court (HC) directives on the sections 54 (arrest under suspicion) and 167 (interrogation under remand) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

A 4-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha set the date after hearing the appeal petition.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Additional Attorney General Murad Reza moved for the state in the hearing.

It was learnt that a student of Independent University Bangladesh named Shamim Reza was arrested under section 54 in 1998 and he was found dead at Detective Branch office in the city on July 23 in the same year.

Later, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) filed a writ petition with the HC in this regard.
