Dhaka, May 15: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday dismissed the review petition of lifetime imprisonment of war crimes convict Delwar Hossain Sayedi.

A five-member appellate division bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Monday morning.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) started the trial proceedins of Jama’at-e-Islami Nayebe Amir Delwar Hossain Sayedi as the first accused on October 3, 2011. ICT sentenced him death on February 28, 2013 for his crimes against humanity during the War of Independence in 1971.

After filing appeal against the verdict on September 17, 2014, a five-member appellate division reduced his punishment to lifetime imprisonment.

After 15 months of the appeal verdict, the apex court published the full version of the verdict which followed the review of the verdict.

On January 12 last year, the state moved against the Sayedi’s lifetime imprisonment verdict and filed review. Five days after the submission, Sayedi filed a review of the lifetime imprisonment to acquittal.
