Dhaka, May 5: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday rejected the review petition upholding death sentence of Jamaat leader Motiur Rahman Nizami for committing crimes during the War of Liberation in 1971.
Earlier death row convicted war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami filed the petition seeking review of his death sentence.
A four-member appellate bench led by Chief Justice SK Sinha along with Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique upheld the verdict of the appellate division around 11:30 am.
With this order, the final steps of Nizami’s case have completed, there would be no barrier to execute the order unless Nizami plea for life to the President.
Earlier on March 29, the defence lawyer submitted the review petition at the Supreme Court Registrar office.
On March 30, the state moved to the court for a quick hearing on the petition. On the same day Justice Mirza Hossain Haider forwarded the petition to full bench of appellate division.
Earlier, on March 15 the appellate division of the Supreme Court published the full verdict of the appeal of Jamaat-e-Islami Aamir Motiur Rahman Nizami after CJ signed it.
International Crimes Tribunal-1 on October 29, 2014 served death sentence to Nizami for his crimes against humanity during the War of Independence in 1971.
