Dhaka, August 29: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday ordered Citycell to pay its Tk 477.51 crore dues to the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Council (BTRC) in installments within two months.
A five-member bench, led by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the Citycell authority.
The court also ordered that Citycell can continue its operation on some conditions.
Earlier, on August 17, BTRC issued a notification, asking why it would not be shut down for failing to pay back the government dues despite repeated reminders.
The regulators had given the operator a month to respond. The High Court on Aug 22 asked the authorities to give Citycell that much time, until Sep 16, to continue its operations.
Now the apex court`s directive came after the BTRC challenged the High Court order.
Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud represented Citycell while Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Barrister Reza-e-Rakib represented the BTRC.
