Gaibandha, November 26: A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the local Awami League lawmaker and 32 others in connection with the killing, looting, arson and illegal eviction of the Santal community people on November 6.
Besides, some 500 to 600 anonymous people were also sued in the FIR.
Thomas Hembrom on behalf of the Santal community filed the FIR with Gobindaganj Police Station on Saturday afternoon.
A 10-member delegation team of Rights organisations Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), Nijera Kori, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) and Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD), was present while submitting the FIR.
The delegation team reached Gobindanj at noon on the day for providing legal aids to the Santal people.
Of the people sued in the FIR were known as AL lawmaker from Gainbandha-4 Principal Abul Kalam Azad, Managing Director of Rangpur Sugar Mills Abdul Awal, Gobindaganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Hannan, Chairmen of Shapmara and Katabari unions Shakil Akondo Bulbul and Rezaul Karim Rafique.
Nazmul Ahmed, OC-Investigation of Gobindaganj Police Station, accepted the FIR.
Confirming the news, Subrata Kumar Sarkar, Officer-in-Charge (OC), said the statement has been accepted as FIR. Further steps will be taken complying with the directives of high-ups and court.
On November 6, a tripartite clash broke out between the Santals, staff of Rangpur Sugar Mills and police over the eviction of the indigenous people from the disputed land. The clash left three Santal men dead and several others, including some policemen, injured.
