Rajshahi, April 23: A teacher of Rajshahi University Professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiqui of the Department of English was killed by some miscreants on Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi police have started investigation over the RU teacher AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee murder giving importance on three issues.
Police thought there may be conflict over setting up a music school in Dargamaria village, ongoing blogger murder and personal rivalry issues behind the killing and these issues will get priority during the investigation.
The miscreants murdered him at about 7:30am near his residence at Shalbagan area in Rajshahi city. His slit throat body was found lying on the road.
Rezaul Karim’s brother Sajidul Karim Siddiqui said his brother went out of the residence to go the university by the university’s bus. The bus was scheduled to leave at 7:40am. But before reaching the bus stoppage, he was murdered by the miscreants. His body was found lying near the main gate of another residence.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Commissioner Shamsuddin said, “It was learnt that Dr Rezaul Karim had no personal enemy. His family could not provide any information regarding his enmity with anyone.”
“He was not involved with any teachers group in the university. If he wrote anything in any blogs then militants may target him. Police investigation is underway in this regard,” RMP commissioner said.
Wishing anonymity, another police official said, “The attackers attack him from back side with lethal weapon and slit the victim`s throat, leaving him dead on the spot. Three injury marks were seen.”
“The professor has been killed in the same way that the bloggers and online activists were slain. That leads to the suspicion that this might be the handiwork of radicals,” he added.
Another official of DB police said, “The slain professor established a music school few days ago in Dargamaria village under Baghmara upazila defying the objections from the villagers which could be another reason behind the killing.”
Sajidul Karim is the education officer of Singra in Natore district. He used to live along with his brother Professor Sajidul Karim at 261 Shalbagan (Sapura) area at their ancestral house. He also went out of the residence for his working place. When he reached Shalbagan railgate, his wife informed him over mobile phone that his brother was murdered.
Rezaul Karim, professor of English Department, was wearing a white shirt, trousers and sandal shoes.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boalia police station Shahadat Hossain Khan said, they were investigating if there were any terror connection with the incident.
Earlier on November 15, 2014, Rajshahi University’s Sociology department teacher Professor AKM Shafiul Islam was murdered in broad-daylight. He was critically injured when the miscreants hacked him near his residence at Chouddapai area adjacent to Rajshahi University after he returned from campus.
Later, he was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctor declared him dead. Just five hours after the murder, a militant organisation styled “Ansar Al Islam Bangladesh-2” posted a status on Facebook claiming the responsibility of the murder.
In the past, two more teachers of Rajshahi University were also murdered. On December 24, 2004, Professor Mohammad Yunus of the Department of Economics was hacked to death when he was on morning walk at Binodpur area adjacent to the university campus.
On February 1, 2006, Professor S Taher of the Department of Geological Science and Mineral Resources went missing from the university’s residential area. His body was found two days later in the manhole near his campus residence.
