Rifles, SMGs, grenades recovered in Purbachal, 3 held

Narayanganj, June 2: A huge cache of rifles, rocket launchers, grenades and other weapons have been found during a drive at Sector No. 5 in Purbachal under Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj district.

The arms and ammunition included 62 Chinese rifles, 40 SMGs, two rocket launchers, five pistols, 22 hand grenades, 49 mortar shells, 44 magazines, bullets, detonators were seized during the drive on Thursday night.

The arms and ammunition were recovered from a house and adjacent lake there. The arms and ammunition were kept concealed in a total of eight bags beneath the lake water. Police conducted search into the lake till 12 noon on Friday. Later, a pump was installed to irrigate the lake water.

According to additional police superintendent Faruk Hossain, law enforcers conducted the drive on Thursday night at Sector No. 5 of Purbachal Residential Area under Rupganj upazila and detained the three with arms in their possession.

However, the identities of the arrested persons were not disclosed.

Earlier on Thursday morning, police detained one suspected JMB member Sharif Khan from Chashara in Narayanganj city and having information from him police conducted the drive.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Huq said the arms and ammunition recovered from Purbachal under Rupganj in Narayanganj district were kept about two-and-a half months to three months ago there.

Receiving information, the IGP and other senior police officials rushed to Rupganj from Dhaka. He later briefed journalists about the recovered arms and ammunition.

The IGP said on Thursday afternoon, police arrested suspected JMB member Sharif Khan from Chashara in Narayanganj city. According to his confession, police later launched a drive at ‘Blue City’ under Sector No. 3 in Purbachal and recovered two arms from there.

Meanwhile, additional police superintendent Faruque Hossain said the law enforcers conducted a drive on Thursday night at Sector No. 5 of Purbachal Residential Area under Rupganj upazila and detained the three with arms in their possession.

However, the identities of the arrested persons were not disclosed.
