Dhaka, Jan 12: A review petition filed by the prosecution on Tuesday seeking death penalty for influential Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said state counsel Syed Mahbubur Rahman filed the review petition with a Supreme Court bench concerned for his case.

The move came nearly two weeks after the Supreme Court released the full text of its verdict that had commuted the punishment.

On September 17, 2014, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court commuted Sayedee’s death penalty to imprisonment until death for the crimes against humanity during the bloody war against Pakistan.

On February 28, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Sayedee to death for war crimes.

On March 28, 2013, Sayedee filed an appeal with the apex court seeking acquittal from the charges and the government side on the same day separately appealed to the Supreme Court demanding capital punishment in all the eight charges he faced.

Sayedee was involved in the incidents like killing, looting, rape and forcefully converting Hindus into Muslims in Parerhat of Pirojpur district.
