Dhaka, April 17: Arrest of senior journalist Shafik Rehman inhuman and he must be released immediately cancelling his remand, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded on Sunday.
“For writing against iniquity, government arrests Shafik Rehman from his house. Five-day remand to prominent journalist Shafik Rehman was an inhuman-act,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters while coming out after a meeting Taleya Rehman, wife of Shafik Reman at his Eskaton residence in the capital.
He demanded of the government for unconditional release of Shafik Rehman.
Among others, BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, BNP chairperson’s adviser Abdul Awal Minto and economic affairs secretary Abdus Salam were also present.
Meanwhile, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam alleged that Shafik Rehman was arrested from his Eskaton residence in a false plea.
Nazrul Islam made this statement while addressing in a human-chain arranged Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad ( BSPP) at National Press Club demanding a cancellation of false cases and unconditional release of Bangla Daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman, Journalist leader Shawkat Mahmood and all detained journalists.
They also demanded of the government for immediate release of Rehman.
Shafik Rehman, a pro-BNP intellectual, was arrested from his Eskaton residence on Saturday and placed on a five-day remand in a case for alleged attempts to abduct and murder prime minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
