RAB detained a pilot among four over ‘plane sabotage plot’


Dhaka, October 31: Law enforcers arrested four persons including a pilot of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on charge of plotting sabotage with aircraft.Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested them from Darrus Salam area of Mirpur in Dhaka on Monday night.

The pilot is identified as Sabbir Rahman, a first officer of Bangladesh Biman, confirmed Mufti Mahmud Khan, Legal and Media wing head of Rab headquarters.

“Sabbir is a member of the militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and an aide of deceased militant Abdullah,” he said.

Other arrestees are—Sabbir’s mother Mosammat Sultana Parvin (55), Sabbir’s cousin Asifur Rahman Asif (25) and local tea stall owner Mohammad Alam (30).

When contacted, Taslima Akter, Assistant Public Relations Officer of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, said they knew nothing over the detention of Sabbir.

She, however, said one Sabbir was suspended for his alleged involvement in linking with slain militant Abdullah.

The militants had plan to attack on residences of government’s top officials by plying planes, Mufti Mahmud Khan told reporters during a press briefing. Besides, they had also plan to hostage Biman passengers, he added.
