Prime suspect in blogger Avijit murder killed in ‘gunfight’


Dhaka, June 19: The prime suspect in blogger Avijit Roy murder case was killed in `gunfight` on early Sunday with the members of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at the capital’s Khilgaon area.

Police claim the man, shot dead in Dhaka, is ‘Sharif’, one of the six militants with rewards on their heads.

The deceased was identified as Shariful alias Sakib alias Sharif alias Saleh alias Arif alias Hadi-1.

Law enforcers seized a motorcycle and a pistol from the spot during the `shootout`.

Police conducted a drive, on tipped off, at a house of Meradia Banshpotti area of the capital’s Khilgaon, Deputy Commissioner of DB (South) Mashkurur Rahman Khalid said, adding that police fired at Sharif as he was trying to flee after sensing presence of law enforcers, leaving him bullet injured. Later, he succumbed at the hospital, he added.

“Six persons took part in blogger Avijit killing. Police collected video footage of the incident. Sharif looks similar to one of the killers. He is believed the prime suspect of the murder,” he added.

Avijit was hacked to death at TSC in Dhaka University on February 25 last year. His wife Bonna was also injured in the incident.
