Chittagong correspondent, June 3: Police filed a case against ruling Awami League lawmaker Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury and some of his associates for assaulting Banshkhali Upazila Election official on Friday.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Banshkhali Police Station Mohammad Alamgir filed the case against the local MP at his own police station following the instruction of the Election Commission (EC).
The case was filed under sections 332 and 353 of the CrPC for beating a government official up.
Chittagong District Police additional SP (South) Habibur Rahman said the case was filed at the directive of the Election Commission secretariat for beating up the election official. Two more were made accused in the case.
Sources at the Election Commission said a directive was sent to the Chittagong District Election Commission office from Dhaka on Thursday afternoon asking to file a case against Mustafizur Rahman MP. Later, the case was filed.
Upazila Election Officer Zahidul Islam, who is also the victim, said, “The Election Commission had sent a written order to the Banshkhali police OC to initiate a case over the incident.”
It may be mentioned that local MP Mostafizur Rahman and his followers Awami League leaders had beaten up Banshkhali Upazila election official Zahidul Islam at the local UNO office on Wednesday afternoon for not appointing presiding officres at per the directive of local MP.
Following the incident, the Election Commission suspended the June 4 all UP elections under Banshkhali upazila and said that a case would be filed against Mustafizur Rahman MP.
