Dhaka, Mar 30: Police dispersed the agitating unemployed nurses using sound grenade, pepper spray, water canon from Shahbagh intersection in the capital on Wednesday noon.

At least 50 nurses were injured due to police action.

Police followed different strategies to disperse the demonstrating nurses around 1:30pm.

They threw three sound grenades on the demonstrating nurses from riot car. They also threw hot water and pepper spray from water canon to disperse them.

At one stage, police and demonstrating nurses locked into a scuffle. Later, the scuffle turned into a clash that left at least fifty nurses injured.

Earlier around 10:00am, the demonstrating nurses were protesting a government decision that came yesterday to recruit nurses through tests under Bangladesh Public Service Commission. A total of 3,616 nurses will be recruited under this.

Rajib Kumar Biswas, president of Bangladesh Basic Graduate Students Nurses Association, said, “We want nurses to be recruited through performance, evaluation and seniority.”

Few of the victims underwent primary treatments at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
