Chittagong, June 8: Chittagong police on Wednesday claimed a man suspected with the murder of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akhter, was detained.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (crime and operation) Debashish Bhattacharya briefed reporters at CMP headquarters on Wednesday said the detainee was a top cadre of Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Superintendent Babul Akhtar’s wife was killed in a suspected militant attack in the southern city of Chittagong on Sunday morning.
She was stabbed and shot in the head by three men near her home in the port city while escorting her 6-year-old son to the school bus.
In the press conference, he said that police detained the Shibir cadre Abu Naser alias Gunnu, 38, from Fateyabad area of Hathazair Upazila in Chittagong over murder of Mahmuda Khanom Mitu.
Police said that Gunnu lived in a country in Middle East and returned home five years back. Later, he started his work as Khadem at a Shrine in Fatayabad area. He was involved with Shibir politics. At one stage, he joined several criminal activities including extortion, kidnapping and terrorist activities.
Additional Commissioner Debashish Bhattacharya also said that it was not clear about his direct involvement with the murder. He will be produced before the court with remand plea.
Earlier, the motor-cycle used in killing mission, was also seized and detained seven people including owner of the motor-bike for interrogation. Later, of the detainees, four were released.
Though motor-bike owner, one buyer of it and a middle man were not released, they were yet to show arrest in the case.
Mitu, 32, wife of popular crime buster Babul Akhter who was recently promoted to superintendent of police, was killed in the port city’s GEC area on Sunday.
