Rangpur, Feb 28: Police now confirmed that arrested suspect of Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) activist, who is now under police remand, Ramzan Ali was the main criminal who killed Hindu priest Jagneshwar Roy.
According to Rangpur divisional police chief Humayun Kabir, Ramzan had confessed about his involvement in killing the priest during initial interrogation.
A Panchagarh court on Saturday granted police 18 days in custody to question the trio.
The two others have been identified as Alamgir Hossain, 35 and Harez Ali, 32.
The 22-year-old Ramzan was arrested on Thursday along with two other JMB activists, according to police.
Kabir, the DIG of Rangpur range told a media briefing on Friday that one of those arrested slaughtered the priest, another kept the weapons in his house before and after the murder and the third worked as a watcher.
Three days earlier, Ramzan kept the weapons used in the killing at Alamgir’s home, which were shifted to Harez’s cowshed the day before the attack, DIG Kabir told reporters on Sunday.
“They went to the spot after the Fazr prayers early in the morning. Ramzan hacked the preist with a meat cleaver before slitting the throat,” said the police official.
Kabir said that the assailants handed over the weapons to Harez after the attack, who was waiting at a market nearby.
He claimed that the three have been long involved with the JMB.
Victim’s brother Rabindranath Roy filed a case over the murder and police lodged another case under the Arms and Explosives Act against three unidentified persons.
Ramzan, an undergraduate student at the Domar College, is involved with the Jamaat-e-Islami’s student affiliate the Islami Chhatra Shibir, according to family members.
His brother Mizanur Rahman could not say anything over his involvement with the JMB.
He claimed that Ramzan was not in politics for long due to family problems and his brother was not involved in the killing.
Police earlier detained suspected JMB leaders Khalilur Rahman and Babul Hossain, Islami Chhatra Shibir leader Jahangir Hossain and a Rajshahi University student over the murder.
The student was released later as police could not find evidence of his link to the murder.
