PM inaugurates twin submarines in Ctg

Chittagong, March 12: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday noon has commissioned twin submarines – BN Nabajatra and BN Joyjatra, new addition to the naval fleet for the first time – as Bangladesh Navy started its journey as “three-dimensional force” at a special ceremony in Bangladesh Naval Berth in Chittagong.

While handing over the “commissioning formans” to the commanding officers of the submarines and formally unveiled their name plaques as per the rules of the navy, PM said, “With the induction of the submarines, Bangladesh Navy has started its fresh journey with a new shape and strength alongside the progress of the country”.

“The two submarines have added unprecedented capability to strengthening the defence system to save the country from the aggression of external enemies.”

She also said that the government has already taken various short- and long-term plans to build Bangladesh Navy as a three-dimensional force by 2030.

In order to further intensify surveillance in the  Bay of Bengal and enhance the force’s combat capability, Bangladesh Navy on December 22 received the two China made submarines.

Earlier on November 14, Rear Admiral Liu Zizhu on behalf of the Chinese government handed over the submarines to Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Mohammad Nizamuddin Ahmed at a ceremony held at Liaonan shipyard in China.

Both the submarines are 76 metres long, 7.6 metres wide and are equipped with torpedoes and mines which are capable of attacking enemy warships and submarines.

The highest speed of the submarines is about 17 nautical miles per hour and their displacement is 1609 tonnes.
