NHRC probe team finds evidence of violation at Rain Tree hotel


Dhaka, May 13: National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) fact finding committee found evidence of human rights violations at Rain Tree hotel in Banani on Saturday.

After visiting the hotel on Saturday, Nazrul Islam, the convener of the five-member NHRC committee said, “We got lots of information from media earlier. And it is apparent that human rights were violated here. But, more investigation is needed before submitting the final report.”

“The hotel management claimed that they did not notice any abnormality on that day but we will have our final say after thorough investigation,” he said.

Earlier, on Thursday night police arrested Safat Ahmed and Sadman Sakif from Sylhet city’s Pathantula area in connection with the case.

The two victims gave their judicial statements before a court in Dhaka in the case on Thursday.

Metropolitan Magistrate Nurun Nahar Yasmin recorded statements of the victims under section of 22 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

One of the rape victims filed a case with Banani Police Station on May 6 accusing five people.

Of the accused, Safat and Nayeem were sued for raping the two female university students while Sadman Sakif, Safat’s driver Billal, 26, and his unnamed bodyguard for abetting in the crime.

According to the case statement, the plaintiff along with her friend went to a residential hotel at Banani to attend the birthday party of Safat at about 9:00pm on March 28.
