Myanmar makes ‘political promise’ to China to return Rohingyas: FM

Dhaka, July 08: Myanmar has made ‘political promise’ to China to take back its Rohingya citizens from Bangladesh, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said.

He disclosed the information at a press conference on the occasion of “Dhaka Meeting of the Global Commission on Adaptation” on Monday.

“During prime minister’s China visit, we have held talks with the Chinese top leaders, including its President Xi Jinping. There, we discussed Rohingya issue so that the displaced Myanmar citizens can go back to their homeland soon. Myanmar has made a ‘political promise’ to China to take back its Rohingyas.”

He also informed that the Dhaka Meeting of the Global Commission on Adaptation will be held on July 9-10. Marshall Island President Dr Hilda Heine and former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and other representatives from various international agencies including World Bank (WB) and Global Commission on Adaptation (GCA) will join the meeting.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin and chief coordinator for SDGs at the Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad, among others, were present during the press conference.
