Moon sighted, Eid-ul-Azha Aug 22

Dhaka, August 12: Muslims in Bangladesh will celebrate Eid-ul-Azha on August 22 as the Zil-Haj moon has been sighted.

The announcement came after a meeting of the National Moon-Sighting Committee at Islamic Foundation’s office in Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Sunday.

Zilhaj, the final month of the Arabic calendar, will therefore begin on Monday. Eid-ul-Azha is observed on the tenth day of the month.

Gulf states including Saudi Arabia will observe the festival of sacrifice a day ahead of Bangladesh, that is on August 21.

The month is considered sacred for it is when pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia for Hajj. It is also when Musilms offer sacrifice by slaughtering animals.

Around 120,000 pilgrims from Bangladesh will perform Hajj this year when its main ritual begins on Aug 20 with congregations at the plain surrounding Mount Arafat in Makkah.
