Michigan shootings: At least 7 killed in US city

Themorningbellbd.com desk, Feb 21: US police have publicly identified a man suspected of driving around the Michigan city of Kalamazoo and randomly shooting people.

Kalamazoo department of public safety chief Jeff Hadley named the suspect as Jason Dalton, 45, of Kalamazoo county, the AP news agency reported.

Dalton reportedly has no known criminal history.

Michigan police earlier launched a manhunt after six people were killed and several others were injured in seemingly-random shootings near a Kalamazoo car dealership and restaurant late on Saturday night.

One of the victims, a 14-year-old girl, died on Sunday after she was critically injured, taking the death toll to seven. It is not clear how many other people are still injured.

Michigan police earlier arrested a man whose car matched a description of the gunman’s.

Sheriff Paul Matches later told the WWMT TV network at the time of Dalton’s arrest that the suspect “voluntarily” gave himself up after he was approached by police.

“The threat to the public is over. This is your worst nightmare when you have someone driving around killing people,” Matches said.

The shooter was earlier described as a white man who was driving a blue or silver Chevrolet HHR.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas told NBC that police began investigating a shooting at a Kalamazoo County apartment building around 8pm on Saturday after a woman was shot several times.

She is in a serious condition, he said.

About three hours later, they were called to the car dealership where two people, believed to be a father and son, were fatally shot and a third person was wounded.

Another five people, including the 14-year-old girl who later died, were reportedly shot near a local restaurant.

In that incident, the gunman reportedly spoke to the occupants of several vehicles for a few seconds, before he “unloaded his weapon into both cars,” Matyas said.
