Dhaka, December 18: Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna on Sunday freed on bail after spending nearly two years in jail on sedition and criminal charges.
Senior jail superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj Jahangir Kabir confirmed the matter.
He said Manna was freed around 7:50pm after receiving relevant documents.
Manna was in jail for 22 months without trial. No investigation report was filed against the charges pressed on Manna and there was no progress of his trial thus far.
On February 25, 2015, Manna was arrested a day after his phone conversations with BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka, regarding strengthening the anti-government movement, was leaked.
Later, a case was filed against him for instigating the armed forces to topple the government.
On November 28, 2016, the Supreme Court upheld Manna’s bail with discomfort, as the government’s “investigation into Manna’s case was not satisfactory”.
