Dhaka, Mar 2: BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman are going to be elected again unopposed as Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson and senior vice-chairman as no contestant against these posts.

BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and BNP joint secretary general Md Shahjahan were collected nomination papers on behalf of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman in the two top posts of BNP respectively.

Later at about 3:30pm, BNP joint secretary general Md Shahjahan procured nomination form on behalf of Tarique Rahman for contesting in the BNP senior vice-chairman post.

As the scheduled time for collecting nomination form was over, returning officer Nazrul Islam Khan said nomination papers were procured on behalf of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman for the posts of BNP chairperson and senior vice-chairman. Except them, none procured nomination form for these two top posts.

He, however, said Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman were not elected right now. “We’ll have to wait until March 6 for scrutinising and withdrawal of nomination papers.”

According to the election schedule announced earlier, nomination forms could be collected from 10:00am to 4:00pm on March 2, nomination papers will have to be submitted on March 4, nomination papers will be scrutinised on March 5 and nomination papers can be withdrawn from 10:00am to 4:00pm on March 6. Election will be held on March 19 and the BNP’s national council will be held on the same day.

BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s wife Khaleda Zia has been serving as the party chairperson since 1984. In the last council held in 2009, her eldest son Tarique Rahman was elected as the party’s senior vice-chairman.
