Khaleda files bail petition with HC in Cumilla case again


Dhaka, July 29: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday again submitted a petition to the HC seeking bail in the Cumilla arson attack case after the Cumilla court has rejected Khaleda’s bail petition on July 26 in the case.Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon on behalf of Khaleda Zia filed the bail petition with the High Court against the district court order and sought for her bail.

The hearing on the bail plea may be held before the HC bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman, AKM Ehsanur Rahman, a lawyer for Khaleda, told Jago News.

On July 23, the HC had directed the Cumilla court to dispose of Khaleda’s bail petition by July 26.

Eight people were killed and many others injured after a bus was torched in Chauddagram on February 2, 2015, during an anti-government agitation.

The following day, police lodged two cases — one for murder and another for arson with Chauddagram Police Station.

The Cumilla court on July 1 had issued an arrest warrant for Khaleda in the arson case and fixed August 8 for hearing her bail petition.

On February 8, Khaleda Zia was sent to jail after a special court sentenced her to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
